MPAC has recently received several inquiries regarding the newly released POST Use of Force Model Policy. While certain provisions of the model policy may appear similar to language contained within MPAC standards, the language is not identical. It does not necessarily satisfy the requirements established by MPAC.
Agencies should be aware that MPAC standards contain more restrictive requirements than those reflected in the POST model policy. Accordingly, language contained in the model policy cannot be substituted for, or relied upon in place of, the specific language required by the applicable MPAC standard.
For purposes of demonstrating compliance with MPAC standards, agencies must adhere to the exact requirements and language established within the MPAC standard. Only the language and documentation that satisfy the applicable MPAC standard will be accepted as proof of compliance.
